Summer Peace Drum Circles
September 7, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
The Sharing Community Action Group is offering area residents a chance to participate in informal drum circles over the noon hour each Tuesday this summer in the Chandler Park gazebo.
Coming together to have fun while creating rhythms, mutual understanding, and a shared sense of community is the goal. Beginners as well as experienced drummers are welcome and are asked to bring a percussion instrument or anything they can tap on. Watchers are welcome too.
The Peace Drum Circles are being organized by the Sharing Community Action Group with help from Michael Thompson, who has participated in drum circles regularly, and Kevin Nichols, who teaches courses in jazz and percussion at Western Illinois University.
The SCA was formed early this year when leaders of local civic organizations were invited to use the tools of Nonviolent Communication to further communication and cooperation among residents in Macomb.
This approach emphasizes, in the words of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “the recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family.”
The SCA Group strives to strengthen dialogue and communication across peoples’ shared humanity, to develop ways individuals and organizations can contribute to an equitable and just, healthy and strong community, and to confront barriers that keep community members apart and undermine community building.
SCA members hope to offer a variety of activities and projects that encourage the wide spectrum of Macomb residents to come together as a community to move toward these goals. The weekly Peace Drum Circle is one of these activities.
