What
is Wireless DSL?
Wireless DSL is an Internet connection made with radio signals rather
than wires. The high speed/bandwidth is comparable to traditional
DSL and cable modem Internet access.
-
Isn't
"Wireless DSL" a misnomer?
Yes. Technically, DSL (digital subscriber line) requires copper telephone
wires. However, many people equate DSL with high-speed or broadband
Internet access and the term "Wireless DSL" has become popular.
-
What
equipment do I need?
We supply the radio equipment, mounting hardware, and cables to reach your
computer or your LAN (local area network). Generally, if you will connect a
single computer, you'll need a network interface card (NIC). If you're
connecting multiple computers, you'll need a LAN (local area network) and
an Ethernet device such as a hub that accepts a 10Base-T RJ45 connection.
We also recommend use of a firewall device or proxy server. If you need NIC
cards or LAN installation, we can provide a quote for those services.
-
How
fast is it?
The maximum speed of the service is dependent on the strength of the
radio signal at your location. However, speeds well above 1.5 Mbps
are possible. Our standard service includes a 256 K committed information
rate (CIR).
-
Is
it secure?
We believe the security of the radio communications is acceptable
for most uses. The technology was developed for secure military communications.
-
Is
it affected by weather?
Precipitation has minimal, if any, effect. Under extreme conditions
(such as rain falling at 6 inches/hour) there can be a slight reduction
in speed, but the connections are maintained.
-
Do
I need a phone line?
No. This wireless service does not rely upon phone lines.
-
What
are the bad points about Wireless DSL?
The connection requires minimal obstructions between radios. Trees
and buildings are common obstructions. Generally, the higher the antenna
placement at your location (on your roof, on an existing mast), the
better the signal. If we are unable to achieve adequate radio signal
at your location, there will be no charge for our visit.
-
What
are the fees?
The monthly fee is $65.00/month and requires an 18-month contract.
A twelve-month contract is also available. The activation fee is $495.00.
-
Do
I have to be a business to purchase the service?
No. This service is available to anyone.
-
Where is this service available?
Currently the service is available in Bushnell, Macomb and Monmouth.
If you are with within a few miles of downtown and you have a tall
TV mast, the service may be available to you.
